Why I Joined? – Elijah Wilson

Every athlete has a story about how they found their way into the Tigers family. For Elijah Wilson, that story begins in Gunning, a small town just outside Canberra, and at his very first National Championships.

A First Taste of Nationals

In 2019, Elijah, then a Gunning Public School student, competed at the NSW PSSA athletics trials, throwing a personal best of 32.01m in discus and 11.46m in shot put. His results qualified him for the National Championships in Darwin.

It was there, at just 12 years old, that Elijah placed 10th in the Boys Shot Put (3kg). More importantly, Darwin was where Elijah first crossed paths with Ginninderra club legend and Life Member, Mortisha Rauraa, who was there supporting her daughter, Charlotte, also competing that year.

The Tiger Family Connection

The warmth and encouragement the Rauraa family showed Elijah in Darwin made a lasting impression. When he returned home, Elijah was looking for a club where he could continue to grow as an athlete. Thanks to that connection, he found a natural home at Ginninderra Athletics.

“The support I felt from Mortisha and Charlotte was genuine and welcoming,” Elijah recalls. “It made me feel like I’d already found my place before I even joined the club.”

That sense of belonging drew him to Ginninderra, where he embraced the Tigers family culture and began his journey as a proud member of the club.

Rising to the Top

Since then, Elijah has developed into one of the best throwers in Australia in the U20 age group. His hard work and commitment have seen him not only dominate locally but also gain recognition on the national stage.

Most recently, Elijah proudly represented Australia at the Oceania Championships, a milestone that reflects both his talent and his perseverance over the years.

Why Ginninderra?

For Elijah, joining Ginninderra was about more than training and competition results. It was about belonging to a community that values support, encouragement, and family.

“The Tigers have always been there for me,” he says. “It started with one connection in Darwin, but it’s become so much more.”

Ginninderra Athletics is proud to celebrate Elijah’s journey – from a determined 12-year-old at Nationals in Darwin to an international representative today. His story is a reminder of what makes our club special: community, connection, and the shared belief that together, we grow stronger.
