We’re counting down to a huge milestone—50 years of Ginninderra Athletics Club! Since 1976, the Tigers have grown from humble beginnings into a proud community of athletes, coaches, officials, and families. As we build toward our golden anniversary in 2026, we’re celebrating the people, places, and moments that made the Tigers who we are.
How it started (1976)
Ginninderra’s first official committee meeting was held on 11 August 1976 in Macgregor. Within weeks, registration day was set for 25 September 1976, and the very first club competition kicked off on 2 October 1976—all on a brand-new field at Charnwood. The original uniform? A yellow shirt with a black “G”, paired with white shorts, and centre ID “73.”Raffles helped buy hurdles, megaphones and stopwatches, while volunteers welded, painted, and carted gear from their homes each weekend. Tigers spirit from day one.
Growing a community (late 1970s–1980s)
By the end of that very first year, more than 260 children were registered. The Tigers kept growing—332 registrationsby 1979/80 and a record 553 by 1982/83, one of the largest centres in NSW at the time. Saturday mornings became a family ritual: parents timing, measuring and marshalling; kids sprinting, jumping, throwing and making lifelong friends.
In the early years, Ginninderra athletes represented the ACT at interstate carnivals, picked up medals at NSW Country Championships, and set records along the way. Coaches and committee members drove development across the region, helping shape what became the re-established ACT Little Athletics Association in 1984.
Facilities, firsts, and fierce teamwork
If there was a Tigers “epic quest,” it was equipment and storage. From caravans and spider-prone sheds to finally opening a proper storage building in time for the 1989/90 season, volunteers found solutions, raised funds, and kept the show running. Along the way we trialled twilight meets, hosted visiting teams, built discus circles, and refreshed uniforms—always adapting so kids could compete safely and proudly in black and gold.
The Tigers today
Half a century later, our Tigers family spans Little A’s to Masters, from first-timers to national representatives. We’re still about belonging, having a go, and getting better—together. The faces change; the spirit doesn’t.
